Replacing a ball in a 2005 Malibu?

My husband is in the military and not available for training. I took the 2005 Chevy Malibu 4 tires for Firestone. I said you need a new ball and an arm or something of the bar. Anyway it cost me 887 to do the job and not was included my tires. I told them my husband knows when he returned home this week. And I bought the tires. My question is would this be something my husband could do you have access to an elevator here in the message which we live. The difficulty of the task would be?
